Which of these would best describe you? A.) I Play BIG! B.) I tend to play small and safe or C.) I haven’t really thought about it.
Many of us would answer B or C. We have been taught to avoid risks, color inside the lines and not make waves. Fear, self-doubt and the belief that we lack what it takes to succeed causes us play small. Our desire to be accepted and be liked often leads us to conform. Like Russian dolls, The more we try to fit in, the more we shrink and lose our individuality and creative genius.
Do you desire to play big in life and business?
Do you have a vision or a dream? Do you desire to do big things? There is a short and yet powerful prayer by a man who desired to expand and do big things. His name is Jabez. His short prayer is recorded in scripture,
“Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory!” – 1 Chron. 4:10
Perhaps you have prayed a prayer like this? Do you have much that you desire to accomplish? I find God’s answer to Jabez’s prayer very encouraging! It says,
“And God granted his request”
Scripture says God is no respecter of persons. He will grant your request too! He has placed big dreams in your for a reason. The world needs what you have to offer!
Big is on the inside!
Recently when I was in prayer asking God to help me play big, I felt Spirit say, “My child, BIG is on the inside!” I realized when the disciples came to Jesus looking for a solution to the oppression and the problems they faced, He said the same thing. He told them not to go looking outside, but to realize that
“The Kingdom of God is within you” Luke 17:21
That’s BIG! The more I pondered, the more I realized, joy, happiness, healing, and all creativity happen inside! After all, what is bigger than the Kingdom of God? It doesn’t get any bigger than that. Truly, big is on the inside.
In psychology this is known as having an internal locus of control. Those with an internal locus of control do not look for factors outside (e.g. the economy, our boss or spouse) to change. Those with an internal locus of control understand the only thing we can change is what is inside.
The things that contribute most to our success are on the inside. Click To TweetBig Dreams Require Big Motivation
The size of our imagination, vision, goals, dreams determine the size of our success. Big Motivation leads to BIG success. The size of your motivation determines if you will overcome procrastination and distractions. It determines if you will get things done or just talk about them. The size of your love determines if you will overcome your fears. It doesn’t cost more to have big dreams than small ones but the results are dramatically different!
“You have to think anyway. So why not think BIG?” – Donald Trump
“Think little goals and expect little achievements. Think big goals and win big success” – David Schwartz.
What is it costing you to play small?
What is the cost of playing small? The answer is everything! One of the most powerful quotes by Les Brown answers this question.
“The graveyard is the richest place on earth, because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books that were never written, the songs that were never sung, the inventions that were never shared, the cures that were never discovered, all because someone was too afraid to take that first step, keep with the problem, or determined to carry our their dream.” – Les Brown
What song is in you? What invention, book, painting is waiting to come through you. We are here to grow and to release our Divine gifts inside us. What is the cost of settling and living a life of unfulfilled dreams? Nelson Mandela said
“There is no passion in playing small – in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living”
God has put infinite potential in us. What are we so afraid of that makes us willing to settle and refuse to share our gifts and talents with the world? Is it doubt or the “What if” questions? What if it doesn’t work? What if I fail? Consider this. What if it works? What if you succeed? What if you become a powerful change agent.
Is it the belief in lack? Do you feel you don’t have enough money, knowledge, skills to succeed. History is replete with examples of those who have overcome all of those factors and more. Do you believe you are being humble by playing small? Do you ask yourself the question, “Who am I to succeed?” Marianne Williamson gives a powerful answer to that question,
“We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.”
Questions for reflection
- In what areas have I been playing small?
- What has playing small cost me?
- What will it cost me in the future if I continue to play small?
A question that changed my life
I remember a day like it was yesterday even though several decades have passed. I was sitting on my second hand worn couch my otherwise unfurnished one bedroom apartment. I had purchased Tony Robbins Personal Power cassette series (yes I’m dating myself). Tony had instructed us to imagine our dreams and visions fulfilled. I did. It was awesome. Then he asked the question, “What if nothing changes? What if 3, 5 even 10 years from now your income and bank account stay the same?”
That question GOT ME MOTIVATED!!!! I have never looked back. I believe that question played a huge role in inspiring me to take massive action and make my first 6 figure income before the age of 30!
This week tap into your inspired vision and activate your God-given ability to choose. Choose to learn or do something new. Choose to take action in spite of the fear. Choose to recommit to your vision. Choose to get an accountability partner, mentor or coach to empower you.
Choose to play BIG. There is so much greatness and potential inside of you!
