The biggest illusion we must break to get unstuck is the illusion of lack. It is a deeply held belief system that we cling to with all our might. We create mantras, chant, mediate, pray and preach our lack. “I just don’t have enough _________” (money, time, support, education, etc.) to __________(live my dream).
Why do I call it an illusion? Because God does.
The story of the prodigal son’s brother is a fascinating illustration. We usually focus on the prodigal son when we read Luke 15. But the older brothers response sheds a lot of light.
“But the elder brother became angry and deeply resentful and was not willing to go in; and his father came out and began pleading with him. But he said to his father, ‘Look! These many years I have served you, and I have never neglected or disobeyed your command. Yet you have never given me [so much as] a young goat, so that I might celebrate with my friends; but when this [other] son of yours arrived, who has devoured your estate with immoral women, you slaughtered that fattened calf for him!’ (
It appears the older brother had spent a life time focusing on what he lacked. This produced jealousy, anger, resentment and division. The father pleaded with the brother to no avail. The brother stepped into the role of victim. He had served. He had obeyed. For what? The more he meditated on how he had been wronged, the angrier he became.
The father (who represents God) answered, “‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.” Read that again slowly, “ALL that is mine is ALREADY YOURS.
Is it possible that he was already wealthy? Is it possible he already had access to infinite resources? What kept him from accessing his abundance? The STORY IN HIS HEAD!
He had struggled, worked, and focused on trying to prove he was a son when he already was a son! He had been religious in his attempts to show he was worthy trying to earn his way. He already was worthy. He focused on what his brother did or didn’t do. He compared. He complained. He created his own prison that kept him from expressing and enjoying what he already had. (Luke 15:28-30)
Looking at my life I see how I block the experience of receiving and of enjoying the beauty and abundance of NOW. Like the brother, I have a tendency to focus on the lack of time, resources, and knowledge keeping me from greatness. All a foolish and self made illusion! The Father asks me the same question, “Did you not know all that is mine is already yours?”
When we realize the illusion and become aware of what we have already been given. We can use our God given ability to CHOOSE new thoughts. Choose thoughts and feelings on the inside that align with the promise. Then we can ask, believing that we have already received and it becomes ours – first on the inside and then in manifested form.
“I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours.” Mark 11:24
Action Steps to Break Limiting Beliefs of Lack
1. Awareness. Become aware of your thoughts, words and prayers. How many are lack based?
2. Replace. Write down each lack based thought. Now draw a red line through it and say “cancel. cancel” Now create an affirmation of what you DO desire. E.g. If in the past you said things like, “I don’t have enough money” replace with “I AM abundant”
3. Anchor with a promise. Look for the promises you have received. Do you remember a time in prayer when God promised it to you? Find the promise in scripture. Add that promise to the above affirmation. E.g. “I AM abundant. My God supplies all my needs”(Phil 4:19).
4. Begin the spiritual practice of having a morning routine. Every morning renew your mind. Include reading and speaking the affirmations you created. As you read the affirmation FEEL and EXPERIENCE it as already done.
5. Take action. Every morning ask yourself the following question, “What is the single most important action I can take to advance in the direction of my goals, dreams and desires?” Then DO THAT! No matter what else take that action
