In business, our speed of implementation (how fast we act) matters!
A Powerful Business Building Practice Anyone can Implement
The speed of implementation (SOI) is a powerful business building practice you can exercise immediately. It does not need extra skills or resources. Just the willingness to develop the habit of acting quickly. In other words, SOI is defined as how FAST you ACT on an idea. In a race one second can be the difference between taking home the trophy and being part of the masses. In business it can be the difference between leading the way and being trampled in the herd.
First movers advantage
In marketing, the speed of implementation is also known as “first movers advantage“. The advantage of being first is the ability to establish strong brand recognition and customer loyalty before others enter the market. For example, Do you order a soda, or a coke? Do you ask for a tissue or “Kleenex”?
“How fast you are moving is more important than where you are” – Guy Kawasaki
Speed of implementation executed over time widens the gap between you and your competitor. For example, if you completed one project per week and your competition completed one every month the ratio would be 4:1. After five years, however, the difference would be 250:60. You would have completed 250 projects by the time they completed 60. Another advantage is the extra time you, the first mover, would have had to perfect or improve your product or service.
Jesus Understood
One of the most shocking verses I have read is Matthew 8:21-25. Jesus would call people to be his followers and they would immediately drop everything and follow. In one case, however, the man required some time to put his affairs in order.
“Another follower said, “Master, excuse me for a couple of days, please. I have my father’s funeral to take care of.”
Jesus refused. “First things first. Your business is life, not death. Follow me. Pursue life.”
-Matthew 8:21-25 (MSG)
Wow! Perhaps Jesus understood there would always be the urgent but life is in the important.
Progress not Perfection
A friend of mine used to say to me, “do it ugly but just do it.” She understood first movers advantage. She knew the one busy perfecting instead of producing was leaving money on the table. You don’t make money on the ideas in your head or on your desk!
I remember when we first launched our nutritional network marketing company. It was far from Madison Avenue! The brochures were printed on card stock off my computer. The boxes were plain brown cardboard. We still grew exponentially! People joined and bought our products by the thousands!
As the resources come in you can hire the experts and graphic artists. Then you can release the new and improved version. Software has 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, etc. Why can’t you?
Steps to Increase Your Speed of Implementation
- Focus – my favorite question for focus and clarity is
:
“What is the single (or top 3) most important action(s) I can take today to advance in the direction of my goals, dreams and desires?” I teach coaching clients to make this question a part of their morning routine. If you do nothing else but implement that one thing each day you will multiply your success. Imagine taking 365 actions towards your goal!
- Take ONE step at a time (the next one) – a common misconception is that we need to have all the “ducks in a row” before we can begin. If we wait for our circumstances to be perfect there is a high chance we will never start! This verse is eye-opening:
Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant.
If they watch every cloud, they never harvest.
-Ecclesiastes 11:4 (NLT) - Focus on the Reward – another person in scripture that amazes me is Abraham. He did not know where he was going. God just told him pack up and go. And he did! God did tell him the rewards he could expect. I believe we will receive these as well.
“Now [in Haran] the Lord had said to Abram, “Go away from your country, And from your relatives And from your father’s house,
To the land which I will show you;
And I will make you a great nation,
And I will bless you [abundantly],
And make your name great (exalted, distinguished);
And you shall be a blessing [a source of great good to others];
And I will bless (do good for, benefit) those who bless you,…
And in you all the families (nations) of the earth will be blessed.”….So Abram departed [in faithful obedience]
When we develop the habit of implementing quickly. I believe our business will grow exponentially, we will be blessed and be a blessing. We still read about and receive a blessing from studying all those in scripture who obeyed and acted quickly!
4. Write it as a declaration – a goal is something we hope to achieve. A declaration is
something we commit to achieve. No matter what. A declaration is a sentence that begins with “I will __________________” I love the promise that God’s favor shines on what we declare and decree.
“You will also decide and decree a thing, and it will be established for you; And the light [of God’s favor] will shine upon your ways. – Job 22:28
Now it’s YOUR turn!
You have read the hows and the whys of implementing quickly. I have shared what a difference it can make in your life and business. So…..will you take action now?
Right NOW write down 3 projects (actions) you have been procrastinating doing because you thought you didn’t have enough knowledge, skills, time (or what ever lack based excuse you have been using). Yes I did say now.
Got it?
Review the actions/projects you listed and answer the following questions
A. What are the rewards of completing this project?
1. Calculate how much you will earn in the next year, 5 years if you complete the project
2. Reflect how completing the project will improve your confidence, reputation, leadership, satisfaction, etc.
3. Imagine yourself completing the project. What does it look like, feel like? What are you able to do differently?
B. Now go do it! And come back and share your experience in the comments. When you advance boldly in the direction of your goals dreams and desires you give others the courage to do the same. In that way “all the families of the earth are blessed”.
Praying YOU prosper in ALL things (and implement quickly!)
